The 2019 NY2LA Sports Spring Extravaganza hit the hardwood this past weekend as the only NCAA “live” period this spring saw teams from across the country make the trip to Wisconsin for three days of exciting action and the opening session of the 2019 NY2LA Basketball Association. As the final horn sounded a number of talented prospects had made their presence felt at various levels. Here’s a look back at some that stood out over the weekend…
Here is a look at standouts from this past weekends April Live period in Milwaukee…
2020 Wisconsin Premier G Keonte Jones, a man among boys this past weekend defends well, gets to the rim, nice perimeter stroke and handles the basketball very well. Was very impressed with Jones poise on the court, he has a great feel for the game and can score at will when he has it going. Look for Keonte to get a few colleges radar if he continues to play at this level throughout the spring into the summer.
2020 Breakaway B-ball duo G Nathan Shockey and F Colin O’Rourke were on a tear this weekend both really solid skilled players that work well in tandem together. Very impressed with Shockey’s ability to control the game on both sides of the ball run the offense getting his teammates involved and still score the basketball when needed. O’Rourke was a man amongst boys this weekend very mobile big that plays well around basket with solid footwork and good post skills.
2020 Carroll Gol1ve G Gavyn Elkamil had a very solid weekend, Gavyn can score the ball on 3 levels of the court getting to the basket, mid-range and beyond the perimeter. Nice size guard that can finish in traffic and take contact when going to the rim. Was very impressed with this squad out of the Kansas/Missouri area, very solid from top to bottom with Elkamil running the show.
2020 The Academy AABA SF Michael Robinson, high energy guy who had a very solid weekend at this year’s spring event, very active around the rim, plays with a lot of heart and does not take plays off. He caught my eye from the activity he displayed on the court when his team was down fighting to get back in a game, Robinson was crashing the boards, scoring on put backs, knocking shots from the perimeter and very active on defense. Definite steal from anyone looking for a high motor guy that will leave it all on the floor.
2020 Yanders Law F Alex Martini, I was all over the high motor guys this weekend and Alex fell into that category, this guy plays hard and fast, he’s tenacious on the boards, aggressive on defense and leaves it all on the court. Martini gives you a lot on the court and has the ability to step out to the perimeter and knock down shots, he can also score around the basket very effectively. Another steal for any school looking for a high motor guy that can come in and make an impact on the court.
2020 SYF Players SG Charles Yoder, plays on a well balanced SYF squad that runs an offense suited for his game and his ability to get shots off from the perimeter, also like his ability to shot fake and get to the rim on defenders that run him off the perimeter. Yoder has a great feel for the game and plays well with and without the basketball in his hands, school looking for a consistent shooter definitely need to keep Yoder on their big board.
2020 Colorado Chaos PF Caleb McGill, one of my top performers from this past weekend, this kid gets it done, another active big guy that was solid all weekend. McGill plays with a chip on his shoulder, he’s active around the glass, goes after every loose ball, every rebound and gets a lot of points on put backs. McGill gives you 110% on every offensive/defensive possession and definitely turned some heads this past weekend every day including Saturday when he posted a 24 point 15 rebound 7 block performance against SYF. He holds offers from Air Force, Northern Colorado, Montana, Drake, Denver, and UC-Davis.
2020 AUSA Hoops PG Hunter Jack Madden, really like this kids feel for the game, very high basketball IQ, love his ability to get everyone involved on the court and scores ball the ball when needed. Madden plays with great pace, doesn’t turn the ball over and knows how to get everyone involved.
2020 H.I.T. PF Sam Schultz, another guy with a big-time motor that played well this past weekend, Schutz plays hard, very aggressive, doesn’t take plays off and was very active all weekend rebounding, defending and keeping his team in games with his strong play. Schutz continues this play throughout spring into this summer he should definitely see schools take an interest in his services.
2020 Illinois Bears three headed monster of PG Jacob Schadegg, SG Caleb Zarliene and SG Carson Parker, Schadegg runs the show, getting everyone involved on the offensive end and setting the tone on defense. Zarliene and Parker are players both have a great feel for the game and play well together, enjoyed watching this group play this past weekend, not sure if this group has played together before but they are all in sync on the basketball court. Zarliene is a very good athlete that makes plays around the rim and scores in a variety of ways.
2020 Gain Elite SG Jack Wetzel, solid player that it gets it done from the perimeter, Wetzel had a very good weekend scoring the basketball and showing off his ability to score in bunches. Wetzel has very good size, moves well without the basketball and does a good job making everyone else around him better, another guy that will continue to see his stock rise throughout this spring/summer basketball season.
2021 All Iowa Attack Red PG Marcus Morgan, good size guard with a really good skill set that definitely looks the part of a special player. Great feel for the game, solid ball handler, gets to the rim, finishes in traffic and will definitely turn heads this summer.
2021 Carroll Gol1ve PG Phillip March, small guard but very big IQ, had a solid performance against SYF Players, scoring the basketball, defending SYFs best player causing havoc on defense. Very tough player that doesn’t back down from competition and will definitely draw attention with that mentality.
2021 Quad City Elite PG Jordan Rice, do it all PG with a great feel for the game and very high basketball IQ. Rice a quick shifty guard that drives defenders crazy with his ability to score and get everyone involved on the court.
2021 Minnesota Select PF Andrew Mandel really liked Mandel this past weekend, nice size with good mobility, blocking shots and scoring around the rim. Mandel has the potential to be a very special player, he will definitely turn heads this spring/summer.
2021 Team Ramey PF Omarion Henry, high motor, athletic guy that was on a mission all weekend. Henry plays very aggressive, rebounds the ball well, very active around the rim and gets it done on the defensive end.
2022 Phenom University G Steven Clay, played well throughout the weekend, finishing at the rim, rebounding and guarding the best player on every team. Playing up two levels all weekend Clay showed why he will be regarded as one of the top players in Wisconsin and the country in the Class of 2022.
