From a strong junior high school season and then an even better grassroots season with Team Focus, the recruitment stock of Sam Essegian has continued to greatly build. The 6’6” senior wing has built interest and offers from colleges at multiple levels.
Currently, Essegian has earned himself athletic or scholarship offers from Bluffton, Goshen, Heidelberg, New College of Florida, Trine, Wabash, and Wisconsin-Platteville. With his ever-growing recruitment, the senior has recently taken a pair of visits.
“I loved how they have a relationship with Wisconsin and how I’d get to be closer and even work with by brother Connor. I also love Coach Gard and the way he coaches and treats his players on and off the court,” he said about his visit to UW-Platteville. When asked about his visit to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, he said “I like the relationship I have with Coach McClung and Coach Nerney and how close the players all are to each other.”
There were two main factors that came into play on what Essegian said what he is looking for in his future college. “Relationships are the biggest thing for me. With coaches and with other players, that’s been a big reason as to why I love basketball. Another is the culture, I pride myself in the way I play and think and act off the court and want like-minded players to be able to push each other in every way.”
Even with his growing college interest and offers, Essegian is in no rush to make his college decision. “Just whenever it feels right,” he said about a timeline on his commitment. “As of right now, I have my mind on as soon as the school season ends, however if it feels right I could commit sooner.”
